It's been too long since I've written. Ugh. Yesterday one of the guys at work asked me if I was still working on getting in shape for the marathon and it came to me. Ya, it would be ubber cool to go to China, but getting in shape has become more for me rather than for any marathon.
On Thursday I stopped at a different Walmart than the on I usually go to (I was on that side of town). That store had cute work out pants & capri's in MY size! Kick ass! Spent more than I planned on, but now I don't have to do laundry every freaking day WOOO HOOO!
Hopped on the elliptical for 15 minutes today. Deb did 20 and at a faster rate lol. The time spent on that tho felt so much better than equal time that I've spent on the treadmill. Downed my entire water bottle (1 Litre) and had to get a refill after 10 min on. Drank another 1/2 of it during the next 5 minutes lol. Peeing clear again. Have I ever told you how much I hate sweating? Blech. Ran out of time to hit the pool Deb needed me to help w/ her two year old this afternoon. Don't you just love disjointed posts lol.

Solo
After dropping Kira off at school this morning I ran a few errands and then went to the gym all by myself. Hit the treadmill for a bit and then the elliptical. It was so freaking weird to try that sucker out for the first time! After that I went to the weight room to work on my arms. Ya, lets just say that my arms are WIMPS! I used 3 different machines with 5 reps of 10 on each. one for triceps & biceps, one for shoulders & triceps, and the last one for the upper back. My poor shoulders are all achy now. My legs are sore too, but since I've been walking for some time now I'm kind of used to that feeling.
Deb and I are supposed to get together tomorrow morning to work out. We shall see if she actually does this time. Originally she was going to work out after work tonight. Instead she went to her in-laws. Yes, I am well aware that she is in much better starting off shape than I am :P. Even If she does come with me tomorrow I know that she wants to work on toning her legs while I'm more interested in building my walking endurance at the moment. She will probably work on the leg presses for a while and I'll go straight to the treadmill for a bit and then we can work the arms together. Even tho it's been only 2 days I'm comfortable enough now to just do it on my own and don't need someone to hold my hand anymore lol.

exploration
Deb tells me this morning that she had a coupon for 2 weeks free @ one of the local gyms so WE needed to check it out together on the way up to her Dr appt. Like I really wanna spend an hour in the waiting room, but since it's Tuesday and neither of us work today might as well get off our butts and check it out. Worst case scenario neither one of us like it and it was a wasted trip.
When we get to the gym and park, this skinny-mini walks out all cute and perky. You know, the ones you just want to run over in your car? Yup, that would be her. We both kind of went, 'well great. but we're here so we might as well go inside.' Oddly enough we saw 5 handicap parking spaces. More than I'd expect to see in front of a gym. Mr. Yummy was working the front desk. He asked us if we could wait for a minute before giving us the tour so that he could check in the ladies that walked thru the door behind us. Turns out that this gym has a program designed for Seniors. Pretty cool. As we're taking the tour we see people of pretty much every shape and size working out. That was a major point in the gym's favor. I DON'T want to work out with only but Ken and Barbie look alikes. As the tour was winding down we turned the corner & see a UPS guy looking slightly lost. Mr. Yummy asks if he needs a signature and when the response is affirmative tells UPS guy that next time just grab one of the guys running around in a shirt. Smart a** that I am mutters to Deb, "ya, as apposed to the naked ones". Which of course she snickers too. When he asked, we did tell him the joke. Thankfully he didn't take umbrance to it. Something that Deb and I found cool was that Mr. Yummy treated everyone with respect. He didn't treat me any differently than Debi, nor did he treat us any differently than the Seniors he checked in while we were there.
We didn't sign up at that moment because Deb and I wanted to talk about our impressions, and why start up on our 2 weeks free if it was going to be a few days before we were able to get back. A few hours later Deb and I were both free again so we decided that we'd take the 2 yr old with us and stick her in the daycare room. Daycare hours are a bit restricted which sucks, but since I'll probably be using it mostly after dropping Kira off at school in the mornings it shouldn't affect me often. Even if I wind up using it occasionally (or if Deb and I go work out together and take her 2 yr old) $2/kid for a max of 2 hours isn't bad at all. Unfortunately the time we chose to head up today the daycare room was closed. It is open from 8am- 11am and then again from 5pm-8pm. Sooo we wound up hanging out together, picking up both 8 yr olds and then going back up to the gym around 5:30. That of course meant we had to pay the daycare room for all 3 kids instead of just one. Because of time constraints for this eve we had only about 45 min to exercise, shower. and change. Since I am far from 'in shape' I didn't feel comfortable going to the gym on my own the first time which is why we went together. We did about 25 min on the treadmill (I put mine at a 6 incline & 2.7 mph) then we went to the weight room to work on arms. Bat wings are oh so sexy. 5-10 min in there and I was ready to cry. On the way to shower off we decided to go ahead and try the sauna. On the door it is posted a time limit of 3-5 minutes. It felt so good in there I could have easily laid down and taken a nap. Hence a good reason to follow the time limit. A shower was a definite requirement after the sauna tho lol.
Originally Deb and I were going to try to get back together @ 6am Wednesday morning to exercise again since she has to be to work @ 10 and school doesn't start on Wed till 9:20, but working out kicked both our butts and by 8pm we were both beyond ready to go home and veg. I'm going to try going tomorrow by myself after dropping Bug off at school.

dishes
As part of my 'healthier lifestyle' I've gotten rid of my big plates and substituted salad plates instead . Finding smaller bowls tho has been a bit of an issue. Even Walmart doesn't have cheep small bowls GRRR. The size I want is the small desert bowls. They run about $3 each. A bit pricey for me since having two kids I have to buy 2 bowls for each of us. And as we all know I'm CHEEP.
On Tuesday, Deb drug me along shopping with her. This year Sean's school went to uniforms and they didn't tell the parents until 2 weeks before school was set to start. Deb is still trying to find deals on certain colored polo shirts and pants. Expensive little buggers. Anyway, Deb had 2 coupons for this one store but the stipulation was that only one coupon per visit. Since this store is on a side of town that we don't frequent often she wanted to purchase all she could if she could find what she was looking for.
While we were shopping together I found a four pack of little kids bowls for $3. Granted, NOT microwave safe, but all they hold is 3/4 c. So now I have 4 Dora bowls (2 blue and 2 purple) and 4 Disney Princess bowls (2 light and 2 dark pink). The pink bowls were Kira's addition.
It's amazing how doing something as simple as changing the size of your plates you can trick your mind into thinking that you have more food than you actually do and so therefore are full faster.
Each of my kids help me be healthy in different ways. Kira helps me to pick out the healthy food (Sam would rather have sugar). Sam helps by telling me we need to exercise and getting irked when we don't have time for a daily walk. There is an ulterior motive for the walks tho. If we walk to the Library (NOT the downtown one :P) they can play on the computers and then on the way home we pass the gas station and so we HAVE to get a slushie since we are sooooo thirsty! I love my children.

Off my butt
Sooo, turns out that my pedometor is spastic and it counts double what I actually walk. I thought it was a bit off since I wasn't feeling the 'burn' after those "5 mi" Tuesday. So that 5+ was really closer to 3 LOL. No idea what I actually walked today seeing as I didn't bother with it once realizing it was reading wrong. :(.
I had some books to return at the library so I figured that I could walk to the downtown lib and then walk over to the parking garage and do the stairs. The road that leads to downtown starts as a two way and then splits off into 2 seperate one ways (name changes and everything). I've never walked to the dt lib but I've driven there several times. Mind you, I've lived in this city for 8 1/2 years. Well, on the way there I walked against traffic so when the road split I was walking South on the one way heading North. The road I was on went right by the Sunbeam Bread Factory. Dang, that fresh baking bread smelled SOOOOO GOOOD! Turned East for a few streets before heading South again to get on the street I needed. Shouldn't have done that... missed the lib by 3 blocks. Yes, I am well aware that those extra 6 blocks were good for me, the only problem was that on my walk I had chugged 18 oz of water and my bladder was rebelling by the time the Lib came into view. Wasn't sure I was going to make it lol.
Finally went and did the stairs in the the garage. They weren't nearly as painful this time as they were the last time. By the time home was 3 blocks away tho, I was really feeling it. I do feel more energized tho. Sore as hell, but with energy lol.

Lazy me
Two Saturdays ago my bike was stollen off my porch. Pisses me off! Not a whole heck of a lot the cops can do about it. Unless I actually see someone riding it. And only then if I can get them to stop long enough for me to use my key in the bike lock hanging off the frame :(.
Sooooo, I've been a bit too lazy since then. Today tho I walked a little over 5 miles. I was watching my 2 yr old niece so she got tossed in a stroller and off we went. Depending on how I feel come morning, we might walk to school, but I'll probably be hurting too much lol. Since I'm off work on Thursday tho I'll plan on another 5 mi walk then.

Phobia's and jerks
I have discovered that I DON'T like riding down hill. Even the gradual downward slope of my grassy yard is enough to freak me. I usually make it about 3 or 4 feet onto the grass before my heart starts pounding and I have to get off the bike to walk it down the rest of the way to my door.
Right turns are another of current phobia of mine when riding. Left turns I'll take at full tilt (not that it's overly fast w/ my skills yet), but when a right turn is coming up I apply the breaks and slow down almost to a crawl before making it.
Rode to the bank this morning. It's 2 residential (not city) blocks past the Speedway station. On the ride back I was nearly to the gas station when this 1980's ford pickup pulls along side to pass me. No biggie. I know that bikes are slower than vehicles and since I'm just starting I'm quite a bit slower than someone whose been doing this for awhile. It's not like I'm gonna play chicken with him. Hmmm, lets see who would win this fight, aluminum bike or steel pickup truck? Any guesses? At any rate he pulls along side of me and when I was about even with his gas tank he decided that oh ya, now he wants to turn into the gas station that we're approaching! Stupid freaking moron! Hi Jerk, either complete the pass, go up to the corner and around to the main entrance to Speedway or don't freaking do a 1/2 pass then try to run me off the road! Wait for your turn.
Unfortunately, once the girl's Summer program ends this Friday I won't have nearly as much opportunity to ride until School starts back up the 19th of August.
Good news for you tho Max, Deb says that one of the local hospitals sells bike helmets for $8. She's going to see if she can find the paperwork for me tonight or tomorrow lol.

How to receive humility
Max just about had a coronary when she discovered that I don't own a cycling helmet. Mind you, she now thinks I have a death wish after I told her that the driving ticket I have to pay for is NOT for speeding, but for no seat belt LOL. Perhaps it's stupid of me, but a new helmet is going to have to wait for next payday. Until then I wont be driving on any major roads anyway. Heavens knows I won't be ready for anything beyond my neighborhood streets for AT LEAST that long!
The girls & I walked the bike down to the gas station yesterday to air up the bike tires. I didn't think to take along the tire gauge because, of course, there should be one attached to the hose. Nope, sure wasn't . On the way to Speedway, Kira would sit on my bike and pedal (while I held on to the seat) for a block and then Sam would hop up on the seat & put her feet up on the top cross bar and ride for a block. After airing up the tires we walked over to the library (right across the street) so the girls could play on the lib comps. When we were done there we walked back to Speedway (leaving the bike chained @ the lib) so the girls could get a slushie and I could get some water. When we returned to the bike Sam stuck the slushie in the drink holder and climbed up on the seat. Made for a great picture.
This morning I pulled out my tire pressure gauge, ya, WAAAAY under filled the tires. 30-35#. It calls for 47-50# lol. So while the girls were at their Summer program I rode the bike back to the gas station, this time taking my gauge with me. Let me tell you, I wasn't too sure that I was going to make it the mile there. I forgot how much bike riding works your thighs. Talk about getting a humbling experience! I was so sure that it wasn't going to be that difficult for me. HA! The ride home was easier, but it wasn't an automatic turnaround. As I was getting ready to leave the gas station I saw Debi pulling into the lib so I went to go visit with her for about 20 minutes before heading back home.
Max Informs me that sitting on the bike seat I should have to stand on tip toe inorder to touch the ground. I raised the seat to what I thought was the right height last night but after riding today I'm pretty sure that it needs to be raised a bit more.

bike
There is now a magenta 10 speed sitting on my front porch. Don't care much for the color, but for $40 I'm not going to bitch to loudly. I'm kind of scared of it tho. The last time I really rode a bike I was probably 12 or 13... 20 yrs ago! Monday, after dropping the girls off at their summer program I'll be taking the bike out for the first time. Woo hoo.

UGH
Today was so not a good day for my eating plan :(.
The Summer program that the girls are in had their dancing and singing program for the parents today. We were running late this morning and I didn't think to grab a breakfast bar or shake. The thing was being put on at a park I wasn't familiar with so I had to follow the bus there. Mind you, it didn't start till 10:30 & we got there around 9. So instead of grabbing a wrap from the nearby bk I should have driven home and then back. Nope, slacker me. After said program they fed us lunch. Slice of cheese pizza and a Pepsi. Oy freaking vey! I felt so flipping crappy afterwards. All that grease and then caffeine on top of it all. Felt sick and had one hell of a headache.
I didn't work till 4:30 so when we came home I laid down for a nap. Didn't help much, and I didn't want to get up after.
This past Sunday Bug & I stopped by Deb's house so that we could use her jogging stroller. Figured it was time to up my exercise and try running instead of just walking. Ya, made it a block if I'm lucky and that was only intermittently.

My sister, Deb and I have been talking about joining a gym together. Her fitness level is far above mine, but we both think that it might be a good idea to have a work out buddy to drag (mine especially) eachother's lazy butts to exercise lol.
Tomorrow evening I'm supposed to go and look at a bicycle for short people. Hopefully that'll work out. Well, since it's after 1am Saturday morning it'll be tonight.

How do I begin?
About a month or so ago I noticed that shortly after eating to much sugar I was becoming very sleepy and would have these horrific headaches. I am not a small woman, well, I'm short (5'2 ish) but Lane Bryant is my type of store. Since type 2 diabetes runs in my family I decided that this was probably a "Hi Stupid, stop while you're ahead" moment and that some major changes were needed in my lifestyle. Better to make those changes now when, if I really want a cheat it's okay, rather than later when it'll send me into a diabetic coma. A real biggie for me was cutting out soda. Mt. Dew was my love! Sugar intake has greatly been reduced, I'm trying to keep tabs on it and keep to the correct portion sizes. Not the easiest things to do!
Of course I made the mistake of telling on of my sisters, Max, that I was trying to be healthier and she decided that I should join in a marathon with her. "HELLO.... Remember, this is the sister you send all your fat clothes to since you lost weight?"lol. So now I've taken up exercising. Nothing fancy so far. A fair amount of walking and I found a 6 level parking garage that I've done the stairs on twice. That bitch kicked my ass and handed it to me on a plate!
I've been looking into joining a gym, but since I'm a single mother of two I'm not to sure how well that will fit in my finances at the moment. Plus I'd have to pay for daycare when working out at said gym. I know it's quite cliche, but I've noticed those happy endorphins that are released post work out. Not quite to the level of those other happy endorphins, but good none the less ;).
Another thing that has helped to motivate me onto this heath kick is that my 8 year old daughter can easily put away an adult portion of food at each meal. She's not overweight yet, but when/if her metabolism slows down she'll be in big time trouble. How can I get mad at her for overeating and eating crap when I'm shoving the same stuff in my face. We are far from perfect in our eating habits now, but we've made some major strides. No more soda stocked (the 5 yr old was quite disappointed when she went shopping w/ me and I refused to buy some), a lot more produce and healthy snacks. Yes, I do still slip up (sometimes just because, dammit I want some french fries) but I feel it the next day and it seems like each time is further apart from the last. I keep a flat of bottled water in the trunk (along with crystal light individual flavorings), that way when we're out and about if any of us are thirsty there's stuff to keep us from grabbing that soda from the gas station.
Max suggested beginning this blog as a way to keep track of my 'trials and tribulations'. We'll see how long this lasts ;)... The blog writing that is.
